KM Elkes is an author, journalist and creative writing teacher based in Bristol, UK. He began writing short fiction seriously in 2012. Since then has won awards for his stories and been published in a number of anthologies. He is working on his first short fiction collection and ideas for a novel.

Successes include winning places in the Bath Short Story Award 2015 and the Labello Press International Short Story Competition 2014; winning the Prolitzer Prize 2014, Brighter Writers Flash prize 2014, Fish Publishing flash fiction prize 2013, Words With Jam Prize 2013. Also wins with Momaya, Writing WM Prize and Aesthetica Award for Creative Writing 2014. He has been shortlisted three times at the Bridport Prize.

Stories have appeared in various anthologies including the Fish Prize Anthology (Fish Publishing, Ireland); An Earthless Melting Pot 1,2 & 3 (Triskele Books); National Flash Fiction Day anthologies (2015 & 2016); Your Messages (Blue Chrome Press); Heat (Momaya Press); Conspicious Accents (Longbridge Publishing Canada); Lightship Anthology 3 (Lightship Publishing); Words With Jam (2014), Labello Press Gem Street Anthology and Aesthetica Annual Anthology (2015).

His work has been published in literary magazines including Structo, Brittle Star, Bare Fiction, Accenti Magazine (Canada), Litro and online at East Of The Web. His fiction has also been used on schools and college curriculum in USA, Canada, Switzerland, UK and China (Hong Kong).

More recently, he has run short fiction workshops, as well as lecturing on flash fiction at Bath Spa University.

  1. Saw your Fish 2013 read at the West Cork Literary Festival. Kudos. I’ve entered several Flash Fictions in the 2014 competition. I don’t have your flair for poetic expression.

  2. Thanks Brian. Good luck with the competitions. For me it is as much what you leave out in a flash as what you put in that creates the ‘poetry’.
